Thuya (pronounced tweeya) is the name of this beautiful wood, grown only in Morocco. Essaouira, a tiny seaside village five hours drive south of Casablanca, begins the journey of the thuya.
Here highly-trained artisans transform the hard burls into beautiful furniture, boxes, and statues for selective buyers from around the world. All through the village you can smell the cedar-like scent of the thuya as the artisans sand and polish the wood. Open a box and enjoy the exotic scent for yourself.
